Day 1 (Mangalore to Belgaum)

DAY 1

(Mangalore to Belgaum)

Did my Indian driving license in May just for the sake of this trip.

Correction

Distance traveled: 3800 kilometers

Everyone was all geared up on 1st of October. Setting their alarm clocks at 5.00 a.m. At dawn, I 
brought my gears to my bike which is 100 meters away.

May I clarify, my university prohibits undergrads to ride a bike but I still keep it outside of the hostel gate. But recently university rules are stricken due a fatal accident involving a junior from my university.

Back to the story, met up Niroop and Shrikanth in front of our university for the first picture of our journey. Then we head to Manipal to pick up Suhas at Manipal University.

After having breakfast in Udupi which is 60 kilometers from Mangalore, we set off for our first day of our journey. We set our way to the 
city of Nipani, Karnataka just 60 kilometers from Belgaum or Belgavi.

With our adrenalines pumping, with the sigh of happiness in our hearts we ride along the west coast of 
Karnataka. Knowing the long journey ahead and most important, going through it alive.

We stick to a plan throughout the whole journey, changing riders with the pillion every 40 kilometers. Its done with a zig-zag pattern. 

Except Niroop only rides on his Bajaj Avenger and I had to ride only my bike because for obvious 
reasons. My Hero Impulse was just too high for him.

We also went through Dandeli forest, experienced short duration of rain and was hoping to see some wildlife but nothing came through us. Roads are fairly good. I would say better than the roads in 
Mangalore.

Then we head to Belgaum. Before reaching Belgaum, like 90 % of India it is covered with villages, 
far rural areas, forest, hilly areas and desert(not in Karnataka though).

Went through Haliyal, a village of farmers. Saw a pack of dogs attacking a cow and at the mean while our Avenger came through  along them. Unluckily for them, the cow charged towards them and they nearly got a horn from that cow. Thought that we are on the dogs side. Avenger went for an emergency brake, skid and fell. Only scratches on the bike but no bruises for the guys. Guys on the Avenger  was a bit shaken but we on the Impulse thought it was funny.

The highlight of the day, we overshoot a junction somewhere before Haliyal. End up we did an extra 60 kilometers. Backtracking our target of having a night at Nipani but had to rest in Belgaum, 60 
kilometers short from Nipani. But we didn’t blame anyone because we saw some picturesque back 
roads of India.

That is a wrap for day one. Next day we enter the state of Maharashtra. Very green, grass plains. One of the best state highways to ride along in my trip with beautiful sceneries.
